Testing for the renovation project of the city’s landmark bridge
China – South China Region
2022
Facing challenges
The bridge is located at a major urban transportation hub and has long been exposed to automobile exhaust (acidic gases) and humid air. Moreover, the original coating has already begun to chalk and peel. The construction must be carried out without completely closing traffic, placing extremely high demands on the coating’s drying speed, environmental friendliness (no irritating odor), and ease of application.
Solution
A matching system comprising “waterborne inorganic zinc-rich primer + waterborne epoxy micaceous iron oxide intermediate coat + waterborne polyurethane topcoat” has been adopted. The primer provides robust cathodic protection; the intermediate coat enhances barrier properties and interlayer adhesion; and the topcoat boasts exceptional weather resistance and self-cleaning capabilities, effectively shielding against ultraviolet radiation and...
Salt spray corrosion resistance. The all-water-based system is safe and environmentally friendly to use, and is unaffected by high-humidity environments.
Project outcomes
After the project was completed, all tested coating performance indicators exceeded the design requirements. Following a year of actual operation, the coating surface remained as bright and new as ever, with no signs of chalking, blistering, or rusting. This project has become a benchmark case for local green anti-corrosion engineering.
