With 50 days remaining until June 1, five outdated standards will be phased out—beyond compliance, there is a third path.

On June 1, the mandatory national standard GB 30981.2-2025 officially came into effect. On the same day, five existing industry standards were repealed and consolidated into the new system. Non-compliant products will then be prohibited from lawful sale and use.

The new standard introduces three core changes: stricter VOC limits, the first-ever regulation of SVOCs, and higher thresholds for heavy metals. Notably, SVOCs—an indicator that most companies have never tested in the past—will now trigger a violation as soon as June 1.

For businesses, the choice is clear: either proactively come into compliance and transparently disclose their credentials in advance, or adopt a wait-and-see approach and leave it to chance. Yet for many small and medium-sized paint manufacturers, there is an additional practical challenge: independently upgrading formulations and obtaining testing and certification entails substantial investment, lengthy timelines, and high barriers to entry.
